1837 - Celebrations in Barnsley for crowning of Queen Victoria
1838 - Husker Pit disaster, Silkstone, 28 children killed. The disaster shocked early Victorian society including Lord Shaftesbury and MPs; and was a major influence on the landmark ‘Employment of Women & Children in Mines Act’of 1842
1840 - Barnsley area's first railway station opened at Cudworth
1849 - Ebenezer Elliott, 'Corn Law Rhymer' buried at Darfield
1850 - Barnsley's first town railway station, with links to Wakefield and soon to Doncaster
1851 - William Mellor, landscape painter, born in Barnsley. Views of Yorkshire Dales, Lake District etc are much sought after today
1856 - Great crowds assembled in Barnsley to mark end of Crimean War
1857 - Lundhill pit disaster, 189 men & boys killed
1858 - Barnsley centre of Yorkshire coalfield
1858 - First edition of the Barnsley Chronicle newspaper
1859 - Charles Dickens in Barnsley
1860 - Death of Joseph Locke, the great railway engineer who attended Barnsley Grammar School and lived in Shambles Street.
1861 - Ten free Locke scholarships established for Barnsley Grammar School by widow of Joseph Locke
1861-2 - Redfearns' glassworks established at Old Mill
1862 - Locke Park officially opened
1862-4 - Establishment and development of the Beckett (Hospital) Dispensary
1866 - Oaks Colliery tragedy: 361 men, boys and rescue workers killed, Britain's worst mine disaster.
1867 - Hope Glassworks established by Ben Rylands
1869 - Barnsley a Municipal Borough: Henry Richardson, Mayor
1870 - Midland Railway build line from Cudworth to Barnsley
1872 - Wood Brothers glassworks established
1874 - Yorkshire Miners' Offices in Barnsley: probably the earliest purpose-built trade union building in the world.
1875 - Swaithe Main disaster, 143 men & boys killed
1876-77 - Public Hall & Mechanics' Institute built & later given to th town by Charles Harvey.
1898 - Benjamin Harrall: Watchmaker to the Admiralty founded
1898 - Theatre Royal built, to the design of renowned theatre architect (of Garrick fame) Walter Emden
1900 - Bonfires & fireworks in Market Hill celebrating news of relief of Mafeking (Boer War)
