Anglo Normans (1066-1215)
1086 - Domesday Book: ‘Crevesforde’ [Keresforth] and ‘Berneslai’ [Barnsley] are mentioned. In residence were one villein with two ploughs and two acres of meadow. The wood pasture was half a mile long and as much wide.

1090 - After the Conquest Ilbert de Laci sub-let much of Staincross Wapentake to Ailric and his descendants. Laci founded the Priory of St John at Pontefract  and bestowed the manor of Barnsley on the Pontefract brethren.

c.1150 - The Priory of St John at Pontefract began the
development of a  new Norman town with a broad market place, distinctive street pattern and church (St Mary's Chapel) which formed part of Silkstone Parish.

1154 - Land by the Dearne later occupied by Monk Bretton Priory (St Mary Magdalene) granted to the monks of Pontefract.

1156 - Building and residence at Monk Bretton Priory

1210 - Coal worked at Silkstone
