Experience Barnsley is a project to create an exciting and inspiring heritage centre inside the Town Hall. The proposed project will have a wide range of benefits for Barnsley. It will:

squareCreate an inspiring and innovative community showcase that will capture the spirit of living and working in Barnsley throughout the past, present and future

squareProvide a facility that brings the Borough's Archive and Local Studies Department together in an innovative partnership

squareEnable Barnsley's Grade II listed Town Hall to become a fully accessible and inclusive community centrepiece, which will provide opportunities for learning, enlightenment, inspiration, socialising and entertainment

squareCreate a strong public urban space and civic core, designed to the highest standards at the heart of Barnsley

squareCreate a positive impact on Barnsley's cultural economy by enhancing the town's status as an interesting and attractive visitor destination

Local inventor Joseph Bramah, son of a coachman of Lord Strafford, invented the first patent water closet in 1778 - invented the first pump to draw beer from a cellar to an upper room of an inn in 1787 - invented the ‘most perfect hydraulic machine’ in 1795 used by both engineers Robert Stephenson and Isambard Kingdom Brunel in their own work - invented the first machine to accurately print bank notes in numerical succession for the Bank of England in 1806 - invented main water pipes for fire fighting in London streets in 1812 - invented a lock which remained burglar proof in a Piccadilly shop window for 67 years despite an offer of Ł200 to anyone who could pick it! - James McLintock of Barnsley invented the down quilt which he called torilimos – the forerunner of the continental quilt - Sir Henry Jackson, a member of the family with the largest Bleachworks in Europe at Cudworth, became First Sea Lord for the navy in 1915 and later Admiral of the Fleet. - Joseph Locke, who was educated in Barnsley, was one of the three great engineers of the 19th century alongside Robert Stephenson and Isambard Kingdom Brunel. - The home of the Wombwell family, Newburgh Park, was where Oliver Cromwell’s body was entombed after it was secretly removed from Westminster Abbey - In 1871 Barnsley had a Town Crier by the name of William Stringer who lived in the Queen’s Head Yard in Peel Square - On 13th March 1879 the first coffee tavern was opened in Barnsley in the Old Chronicle Buildings by the Mayor, Alderman Marshall. The proprietor was Mr G Boycott!
