The central shield  on the Barnsley Coat of Arms includes two shuttles representing the linen trade, a major local industry in the 19th century, crossed mining pick axes, the falcon and padlock taken from the Coat of Arms of Joseph Locke (1805-60) the eminent civil engineer, two boars’ heads taken from the arms of the Beckett family of Barnsley and a cross between two covered cups representing Monk Bretton Priory.'
